The Los Alamos Walkability Advocacy Group
|
LA Walks is a citizens' group supporting pedestrian safety, accessibility,
convenience, and comfort throughout the community. We are actively engaged
with the Transportation Board, TAPS (Trails and Pathways Subcommittee), the
County Staff, other volunteer organizations, private developers, and the public
to make Los Alamos a safer and more enjoyable place to walk.
You can help! Check out our Walkability/pedestrian safety checklist and design guide. Get involved in helping to make your neighborhood a safer and better place to walk. Reduce your carbon footprint and save money—take the Atomic City Transit bus to downtown Los Alamos or White Rock, then walk to your destination. Click here for bus routes and schedules. Walkability ads: LA Walks created a series of video advertisements for walkability, which were shown at the Reel Deal Theater. They are available on Youtube: Video 1; Video 2; Video 3; Video 4; Video 5; Video 6. Got roundabouts? Here is an informative video from the University of Minnesota; RoundaboutsUSA has articles and photos on roundabouts throughout the U.S.; Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, from the Federal Highway Administration, has statistics and detailed design guidance. This publication from the Oregon DOT site provides detailed design guidance, with advantages/disadvantages and costs/benefits. For information on roundabouts proposed for Trinity Drive in Los Alamos, click here. Health Impact Assessment (HIA): A study of health impacts on pedestrians from current conditions on Trinity Drive was funded by LA Walks through a grant from the New Mexico Pedestrian Safety Initiative Program. The study was done for LA Walks by Emily Piltch, of the UNM Prevention Research Center. Here is the final report. Next LA Walks meeting Tuesday, October 8th, 5:00 - 6:00, at the Mesa Public Library. For information on future LA Walks meetings and other upcoming events, go to our coming events page. Our past events page has photos, press clippings, and other information on events sponsored by LA Walks.
Students, communities pay when schools cut busing
- fewer school buses mean more cars on the road. Walking is a good alternative, but many
communities lack safe sidewalks.
